Ketchikan, Alaska German Naturalist William Steller, who first described these large mammals (males are larger than any bear) in 1741, called them "lions of the sea" because of their leonine eyes with golden pupils and lion-like, bellowing roar. Sea Lions usually stay in the water during poor weather but, otherwise, spend much of their time "hauled out" on rocky shores. |
